چکیده

Detonation waves in gas-filled piping or tubing pose special challenges in analysis and prediction of structural response. The challenges arise due the nature of the detonation process and the role of fluid-structure interaction in determining the propagation and arrest of fractures. Over the past ten years, our laboratory has been engaged in studying this problem and developing methodologies for estimating structural response. A brief overview of detonation waves and some key issues relevant to structural waves is presented first. This is followed by a summary of our work on the elastic response of tubes and pipes to ideal detonation loading, highlighting the importance of detonation wave speed in determining flexural wave excitation and possibility of resonant response leading to large deformations. Some issues in measurement technique and validation testing are then presented. The importance of wave reflection from bends, valves and dead ends is discussed, as well as the differences between detonation, shock wave, and uniform internal pressure loading. Following this, we summarize our experimental findings on the fracture threshold of thin-walled tubes with pre-existing flaws. A particularly important issue for hazard analysis is the estimation of loads associated with flame acceleration and deflagration-todetonation transition. We give some recent results on pressure and elastic strain measurements in the transition regime for a thick-wall piping, and some remarks about plastic deformation.

Numerical Simulation of Transient Detonation Structures in H2-O2 Mixtures in Smooth Pipe Bends

Accidental internal detonation waves are a common threat to the pipeline systems of petrochemical or nuclear fuel processing plants. In order to quantify the failure potential of piping structures, especially at bends, accurate detonation pressure histories are required [5]. Since detonations inhibit multi-dimensional wave structures with triple points of enhanced chemical reaction, one-dimensi...

Comparison of Fracture Response Of Preflawed Tubes Under Internal Static and Detonation Loading

The role of loading rate and fluid properties in the fracture of piping under internal explosions is an important issue for designers and accident analysis. This was examined by fracture experiments on thin-walled and preflawed aluminum 6061-T6 tubes. The tubes were 1) statically loaded with oil, 2) statically loaded with nitrogen, and 3) dynamically loaded with gaseous detonations traveling at...

The chemical-gas dynamic mechanisms of pulsating detonation wave instability

The chemical-gas dynamic mechanisms behind the instability and failure of a onedimensional pulsating detonation wave driven by a three-step chain-branching reaction are revealed by direct numerical simulation. Two types of pulsating instability observed experimentally are explained. The first involves regular oscillations of the detonation front, where the instability is driven by low-frequency...

Determination of BKW Equation of State Parameters via Measurement of the Detonation Velocity in Condensed Explosives

An optical system has been redesigned and used to measure detonation velocity as a function of condensed explosive density for RDX, HMX, PETN. These measurements are then used to determine and fine tune parameters appearing in the BKW (Beker-Kistiakowsky-Wilson) equation of state for gases at extremely high pressures. Steady state form of conservation equations along with the BKW state equation...
